Author's note: This story is set before High Five and exists because for some reason when I did the original version of that fic I forgot to include the scene with the communicators.

The Accidental Invention

Accident is the name of the greatest of all inventors - Mark Twain

The Juice Bar and Youth Center was alive with its usual bustling energy. The rhythmic sounds of weights clanking, sneakers squeaking on the mats, and the upbeat chatter of teenagers filled the air. At one of the tables near the back, Billy Cranston sat hunched over a small electronic device, his brow furrowed in concentration. Tools and spare parts were spread out around him, wires trailing from the device he was carefully assembling.

Jason Lee Scott approached, holding two bottles of water. He set one down in front of Billy with a grin. "Hey, man. What are you working on this time? Some kind of… energy amplifier?"

Billy glanced up briefly, adjusting his glasses. "Thank you, Jason. Actually, I'm working on something far more practical."

Before Jason could respond, Kimberly Hart strolled over, flipping her ponytail. "Hey, Billy. Are you building another one of those gadgets that makes my brain hurt just looking at it?"

Billy smiled sheepishly. "Well, I suppose you could say that. But I assure you, this one has a very specific purpose."

Trini Kwan and Zack Taylor joined them, both curious.

"What is it, Billy?" Trini asked, her tone encouraging.

Zack leaned over, inspecting the device. "Looks like a mini radio or something."

"Not quite," Billy replied, setting down his screwdriver. "I've been analysing the challenges we face as Power Rangers. One recurring inefficiency is the necessity of trekking to the Command Center to consult Zordon whenever there's an attack. It wastes precious time, especially during emergencies."

"So… what's the solution?" Jason asked, crossing his arms.

Billy picked up the small device and held it up for everyone to see. It resembled a sleek, wrist-mounted communicator with a glowing interface. "This is a prototype communicator. It's designed to allow direct contact with Zordon and Alpha 5 from anywhere, enabling us to receive instructions immediately."

Kimberly's eyes widened. "Billy, that's genius!"

"Yeah, man," Zack said, giving Billy an impressed nod. "You've outdone yourself this time."

Billy blushed slightly. "Thank you, but it's not entirely without challenges. I've been reverse-engineering the technology I observed in the Command Center to replicate its functionality. However, I haven't had the opportunity to fully test it yet."

"Well, there's no time like the present," Trini said, gesturing toward the empty area near the wall. "Let's give it a shot!"

Billy hesitated, glancing around the Juice Bar. "Alright, but we must ensure the coast is clear. This technology is derived from Morphin Grid energy, and its purpose must remain confidential."

The group quickly scanned the room to make sure no one was paying attention. Satisfied, Billy activated the device, pressing a small button on its side.

"Here goes nothing," Billy said.

A sudden surge of light surrounded the group, and before they could react, the familiar hum of teleportation filled their ears. In a blink, they vanished from the Juice Bar.

When the light faded, they found themselves standing in the Command Center. The glowing consoles and Alpha 5's chirping voice confirmed their location.

"Ay-yi-yi! Rangers!" Alpha exclaimed, nearly dropping the tools he was holding. "What are you doing here?"

The teens looked around, bewildered.

"Uh, Billy," Jason said, scratching his head. "I thought you said this was just a communicator?"

Billy's cheeks flushed red as he adjusted his glasses. "It appears I miscalculated the output frequencies. Instead of initiating communication, the device utilised the Morphin Grid's energy to activate teleportation."

"So… you built a teleporter?" Zack asked, his eyebrows raised.

Kimberly smirked. "Not bad, Billy. Unintentional, but still pretty cool."

Before they could say more, Zordon's booming voice filled the Command Center. "Rangers, your timing is fortuitous. Rita has unleashed a new monster upon Angel Grove."

The group turned their attention to Zordon's tube, where an image of a strange, zebra-like creature appeared. Its black-and-white stripes shimmered unnaturally, and its glowing red eyes radiated malice.

"This is Stripehorn," Zordon explained. "A creature designed to disrupt your teamwork by confusing your movements and senses. You must act quickly to stop it."

Jason nodded, his focus sharpening. "We're on it, Zordon. Let's go, team!"

The Rangers teleported to the heart of Angel Grove, where Stripehorn was rampaging through a park. The monster stomped its hooves, sending shockwaves through the ground and scattering civilians.

"Alright, guys," Jason said, drawing his Blade Blaster. "We know the drill. Let's take this thing down!"

The group called on their Morphers, their voices ringing out.

"It's Morphin' Time!"

In a flash of light, they transformed into their Ranger forms and charged at Stripehorn.

The monster let out a piercing whinny, its glowing eyes locking onto the team. "You Rangers think you can stop me? I'll turn your world into chaos!"

Stripehorn unleashed a wave of distorted energy, the air rippling as it spread. The Rangers staggered, their movements sluggish and uncoordinated.

"Stay together!" Jason called, steadying himself.

Kimberly fired her Blade Blaster at the monster, but her aim was off, and the shot went wide. "This energy field is messing with my balance!" she shouted.

Billy quickly analysed the situation. "The distortion field appears to disrupt our motor functions. We need to hit him from multiple angles to destabilise it."

Jason nodded. "You heard him. Spread out!"

The team regrouped and attacked from different directions. Zack and Trini struck with precise blows, keeping Stripehorn off-balance, while Kimberly and Billy provided cover fire. Jason charged in with his Blade Blaster, landing a powerful slash across the monster's chest.

Stripehorn stumbled, its energy field flickering.

"Now's our chance!" Jason shouted.

The Rangers combined their Blade Blasters into a unified weapon, aiming it at Stripehorn.

"Fire!" they called in unison.

A concentrated beam of energy shot forward, striking Stripehorn directly. The monster let out a final, agonised cry before exploding into a burst of light.

Back at the Command Center, the Rangers demorphed and gathered around Zordon.

"Well done, Rangers," Zordon said. "Your ability to adapt and work together has once again protected Angel Grove."

Alpha 5 chimed in, holding one of Billy's communicators. "Ay-yi-yi! While you were gone, I adjusted these devices. Now they'll work as both communicators and teleporters to the Command Center—on purpose this time!"

Billy examined the updated communicator, nodding in approval. "Thank you, Alpha. That will significantly improve our efficiency in responding to threats."

Jason placed a hand on Billy's shoulder. "Great work, Billy. Your invention just made us even stronger as a team."

Zordon's voice took on a more contemplative tone. "Billy, your ingenuity is impressive. Unlocking the secrets of the Morphin Grid is no small feat. However, its power must be handled with great responsibility."

Billy nodded solemnly. "I understand, Zordon. I'll be careful."

As the Rangers prepared to leave, Zordon watched them with a sense of pride.

"They are truly exceptional," he murmured to himself. "The world is fortunate to have them… and so am I."
