Through the Lens of Promethea

Through the Lens of Promethea

The faint hum of the desk lamp cast a pool of warm yellow light across the otherwise dark office. Grace Sterling sat at the edge of the heavy oak desk, surrounded by towering stacks of manila folders. The smell of fresh paper mixed with faint traces of dust, a scent she had grown accustomed to over years of reading reports no one else seemed interested in.

Her blazer was draped over the back of her chair, the sleeves of her cream-colored blouse rolled to her elbows. A red pen rested between her fingers, poised over a stapled packet of incident reports stamped with CLASSIFIED – DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE.

Grace adjusted her reading glasses and sighed, flipping to the first page. The words Angel Grove Incident #17 were bold at the top of the document. Beneath it, in dense typeface, the first line read:

"Unidentified hostile entity neutralized. Significant collateral damage to civilian infrastructure. Minimal casualties reported. Suspected connection to recurring anomalous energy spikes detected by NASADA (July 1992)."

====

Grace tapped the pen against her temple, the rhythmic click-click-click filling the silence of the room. She leaned forward, her eyes scanning the neatly typed text.

"Minimal casualties," she murmured to herself, circling the words sharply with her pen. Below it, she scrawled:
How sustainable is this pattern? Civilian fatalities a matter of time?

The next section detailed the monster itself: a hulking, bipedal construct of rock, steel, and glowing purple veins. The creature's energy output had increased in tandem with the military's attacks, a phenomenon highlighted in a handwritten note clipped to the corner of the report:

"Entity appears to absorb and repurpose kinetic and energy-based assaults. Stronger with each engagement."

Grace underlined the phrase "repurpose kinetic energy" and scribbled in the margin:
Morphing Grid interference? Evidence mounting. Correlate with past data.

Flipping the page, she reached a blurry black-and-white photograph of the monster, its jagged form towering over Angel Grove's industrial district. In the foreground, tanks were barely distinguishable from the rubble.

Her eyes drifted to the timestamp scrawled in blue ink on the bottom: August 4, 1992, 14:47.

Angel Grove keeps surviving, Grace thought grimly. But for how long?

====

A separate packet of papers caught her attention. The familiar logo of NASADA—a globe encircled by a pair of orbiting lines—was stamped on the front page. The title read: NASADA Energy Analysis: Unidentified Phenomena, 1988–1992.

Grace flipped through the pages quickly, her practiced eye zeroing in on a name she'd seen before: Commander Harold Grayson. His signature appeared at the bottom of nearly every report, alongside repeated mentions of the Morphing Grid Energy Anomaly first detected four years ago.

She pulled a notepad closer, jotting in bold letters:

Grayson—NASADA key contact. Coordinate directly re: energy spikes and potential civilian risk factors.

She paused, tapping the pen against the edge of the desk as another thought surfaced. Beneath the note, she wrote:

Has NASADA prioritized military partnerships over public safety? Evaluate hierarchy of funding priorities.

Satisfied, she circled the note and moved on to the next section, which included raw telemetry data from Angel Grove. The readings spiked erratically on August 4, the day of the latest attack. Grace frowned as she reviewed the numbers, highlighting the peak at the exact time the monster had absorbed the military's barrage.

Energy escalation confirmed, she wrote. Direct threat to containment strategy. Tactical adjustments required.

====

The room was quiet except for the occasional sound of pages turning, Grace's pen scratching against paper, and the steady tick of the clock on the far wall. It was well past midnight, but she hardly noticed. This kind of work—sifting through chaos to find patterns—was second nature to her.

She reached for a fresh folder from the stack and opened it to find another photo, this one of the towering robotic constructs piloted by the so-called Power Rangers. The image, captured from the ground by what appeared to be a military field operative, showed one of the Zords grappling the monster while another fired bursts of energy at its legs.

For all their strength, the Zords looked rough in the grainy photo—one had visible damage to its wing, sparks flying from exposed joints. Grace studied the image closely, noting how the Zords worked together to neutralize the creature while also shielding civilians.

In the report accompanying the photo, a field officer had written:
"The Rangers appear to prioritize civilian safety above all else, often putting their machines in harm's way to protect personnel on the ground. Their actions are effective but difficult to predict. Trust remains an issue."

Grace circled the last sentence and made a note at the bottom:
Trust issue stems from lack of coordination, not intent. Rangers respond to anomalies faster than military. Consider protocols for direct communication.

After hours of reading and annotating, Grace closed the last folder and leaned back in her chair. She stretched her arms, feeling the tightness in her shoulders, before turning her attention to the crisp sheet of letterhead sitting in the center of the desk.

The top of the page bore a simple but striking emblem: a stylized flame surrounded by a circle of stars. Below it, the bold heading read:

Promethea Initiative

Grace picked up her pen and began writing.

To: Commander Harold Grayson
NASADA Operations Command
August 5, 1992

Commander Grayson,

I have reviewed the latest reports concerning the recurring hostile engagements in Angel Grove, as well as NASADA's telemetry analysis. It is clear that the anomalous energy spikes and their connection to the so-called Morphing Grid warrant further investigation and coordination.

While the Rangers have demonstrated an impressive capacity for containment, their presence highlights a critical gap in our understanding of the threat. Specifically:

  1. The energy-absorbing properties of these entities are escalating risks to civilian and military assets alike.
  2. Current military tactics are inadvertently fueling these anomalies, as evidenced in the August 4 incident.
  3. A lack of communication protocols between NASADA, military command, and the Rangers is compounding the threat.

Promethea is prepared to provide technical resources and strategic guidance to address these challenges. I urge NASADA to prioritize public safety over political optics and to establish direct lines of communication with key stakeholders.

You may reach me directly for further discussion. I am confident that with the right adjustments, we can mitigate future risks.

Yours sincerely,
Grace Sterling
Director, Promethea

Grace set the pen down and leaned back, rereading the letter carefully. Satisfied, she folded it neatly into an envelope, sealing it with a wax stamp bearing Promethea's emblem.

She glanced at the clock—it was nearly 2 a.m. With a weary sigh, she stood and gathered the stack of annotated reports into a single, orderly pile. She reached for her blazer, slipping it over her shoulders as she gave the office one last glance.

In the quiet of the night, the weight of what she had just read settled on her. Angel Grove's monster problem wasn't just a citywide crisis; it was a symptom of something far larger. And if no one else was going to step up to address it, Promethea would.

With that thought, Grace Sterling walked out, the envelope in hand, ready to send it to NASADA by morning.
